John Hunter and the Book of Tut Respin Review

John Hunter has been on many a treasure hunt over the years, and like with so many ‘book of’ slot explorers, he returns to the land of the Pharaohs on a regular basis. John Hunter and the Book of Tut Respin is basically a remake of Pragmatic Play’s original John Hunter And The Book Of Tut, but it comes with a twist that affects both the base game and the bonus round.

Instead of the usual featureless base game grind, you get expanding symbol respins on a regular basis. The symbol is selected randomly, and the respins can lead to full screen payouts that top out at 1,000x your stake. The bonus round plays out in a similar fashion, and this is where you can crack the 4,000x potential. We found this to be an entertaining addition to the ever-growing book slot saga, and well worth trying.

John Hunter and the Book of Tut Respin Slot Features

The premium symbols pay between 30 and 100 x your stake for 5 of a kind wins, and a random pay symbol is selected by the book on a regular basis in the base game. The selected symbol becomes the Mystery symbol for that spin, and you need at least 3 instances anywhere in view to trigger the Mystery Respins feature.

You will then see the mystery symbols expand to cover the full reel – ‘book of’ style – and they don’t need to be adjacent to pay. The non-expanded reels respin, and landing new mystery symbols expands that relevant reel or reels, as well as providing another respin of whatever reels remain unexpanded. The feature ends when you land no new mystery symbols, or when you fill the screen with expanded mystery symbols.

The Book symbol serves double duty as both wild and scatter, and as a wild it steps in for pay symbols to help complete wins. As a scatter you need 3, 4 or 5 in view, and this triggers the Bonus Round with an upfront scatter payout of 2x, 20x or 200x your stake, respectively. You get 10 free spins either way, and a pay symbol is randomly selected upfront to be the mystery symbol for the feature.

The Mystery Symbol acts the same way as described above in the bonus round as well, which is to expand to fill the reels when enough instances land. This also triggers a respin of the remaining reels, and you get +10 extra spins when 3+ book scatter/wilds land on the same free spin. The mystery symbol doesn’t change however, but there is no cap on how many extra spins you can win.

The 200 Spins John Hunter and the Book of Tut Respin Slot Experience

You get to see mostly dead spins in the base game, with a few smaller wins thrown in here and there for good measure. We purchase the bonus round at 1:10 into the 2:19-minute highlights video, and you can see for yourself how we fared by hitting the play button below.

Review Summary

Not much has changed in the audiovisual department since the original 2020 release from Pragmatic Play, but the game certainly lives up to the standard we expect from this developer. The big twist in this ‘book slot’ installment is the Respins feature, and it does come about on a regular basis in the base game. This keeps the usual grind more interesting, but the price you pay is a significantly lower symbol values.

Full screen wins top out at “only” 1,000x your stake, which is low compared to the 5,000x “norm” in this genre. The 4,000x overall potential is another trade-off, and it comes with a 1 in 10,204,081 probability. Purists might prefer to “suffer through” a bone dry base game to get a larger bonus round potential, but we found John Hunter and the Book of Tut Respin to be a well-balanced and entertaining game where the respins give you extra chances to fill the grid.
